Dissapointment?
Jun. 25th, 2020 09:42 pmThis text on my FB got a big discussion going. Kind of interesting to see what people do for interpertations and what holes they fill with their own extrapolations. I mainly wrote this for me, but the responses made me realize that FB is really bad for this kind of content so. I am leaving it here as well.
Now I write that I am dissapointed, and yes I am but it is not a scary bad dissapointment, more of a "sigh - I thought we could do better.
"Thoughts and words on the current situation in the SCA regarding bigotry, racism, sexism etc.
The SCA and similar groups have over the years been a place for socially awkward people to gather and geek out, try new things, learn new skills and grow as individuals. Which in many ways is really good. We see people enter our society with the behaviour and energy of young people and who grow and change to become better versions of themselves.
In the SCA we speak of leaving the outside world, the mundane, behind as we go to events. We see the events as meeting our extended family, our chosen kin - our equals. Perhaps we also see it as a bit of a sacred space where one can be oneself and leave the stress and problems of the outside world behind. But we do also speak of taking the good things from our society and bring it with us to the outside world to be better individuals in that world as well. Because we see each other as a chosen family we provide a place for people to make mistakes and learn.
As a society we speak of the chivalric ideals and about how they are missing from the mundane world and that we in our society see those ideals as guiding principles. We speak of courtesy, chivalry, honesty, franchise, courage, loyalty, generosity and prowess and how they can be applied in the ordinary world.
In one way, we close the door to the world outside, but when we exit we bring the SCA with us into that world where we mundanely live so that we can be better individuals and bring the idea of chivalry, in its good and nice way, back to the world.
We have a low bar for entering into the society and the world we play in, but we have the hope that all who come will try to do things better, improve themselves and bring a bit of the magic to the real world.
So I guess the word I am looking for is disappointment…
I am disappointed that some people do not see all humans as equals
I am disappointed that some people have chosen not to grow and change over the years.
I am disappointed that we as a society have failed.
Even if we want to keep the real world outside of our society, we know that it will get in and affect us, we are not in a vacuum, we are all connected to the outside world. My hope is that as we work to improve our society we all bring a little more of the magic to the outside and work to make it a better place for all as well.
